For handmade paper, torn paper and pulp are mixed with water to create a fine, even pulp. This base mixture is usually grey or brown. By adding white pulp and short‑ or long‑fibre cellulose, the pulp becomes lighter and can reach a natural white tone.

Natural additives such as kaolin or potato starch further refine the mixture, improving strength, surface smoothness and overall workability.
